"Outside Your Window": A Book of Poems You'll Actually Want to Read in Every Season
I don’t know about you, but I’m really picky about the kind of poetry I like (which is not a lot in my case - sorry to all you literature lovers).
But I really love the poems in this beautiful nature book, “Outside Your Window: A First Book of Nature” by Nicola Davies.
I found this book at the San Antonio Botanical Gardens a few year back and bought it before I left the gift store (I’m also a pretty picky book buyer when I’m traveling, cause you know, you have to pack it home).
What I love about the book:
It’s organized by seasons (it’ll make you excited about your favorite!)
So many different subjects (like “Water”, “Migration,” “Rainbows,” “Tide Pooling,” Night,” “Wind,” “Worms",” and “Deer in the Dawn” to mention a few of the different poem titles)
Colorful illustrations (who doesn’t love two page spreads with ALL the colors?!)
So much onomatopoeia (the words that “sound” like what they’re describing.… like “Buzzzzzzz….” and “Drip! Drip! Drip!”)
It’s not all poems - there are suggestions scattered throughout the readings like “making a berry crumble,” “things to do in your den,” and “five reasons to keep chickens”
I think what I love most is that the words kindle the feelings of being out in nature and experiencing it - whether it’s the sounds, or the smells, or the realization that you’re really just a small part of this universe and life isn’t really all about you.
Who Should Have This On Their Bookshelf:
Anyone who appreciates the outdoors
Anyone with young people in their life
(would be perfect for short read alouds or during a morning snack or copywork practice!)
