Should Your Student Take The Applied Chemistry Course?
Of course, I would say “Yes! I'm sure your student will love the Applied Chemistry course!” because I have loved learning the content myself while designing the course.
But if you’re not quite sure if YOUR student would enjoy it, here are few questions to ask about your student.
Does your student…
Want to learn something useful and relevant to their life?
Love to watch videos for "schoolwork"?
Still working hard on upper level mathematical concepts?
Want to go into a non-science-y career?
Like to learn from a variety of materials (videos, articles, images, books)?
Like to cook in the kitchen (or wants to learn)?
Love sketching and drawing as way of learning?
If you answered “YES!” to any of the above, then this chemistry course would be a great fit for your student.
Applied Chemistry utilizes two easy-to-read books as a backbone for all the food chemistry discussions and then tags on units to focus on specific food topics. Units are very “video” heavy – pulling resources from across the web, AND each unit has two lab suggestions, if you want to get some hands-on experience. The last component that will get the creative juices flowing, students are encouraged to complete a “project” for each semester to connect what they’ve been learning with their own life.
In what case shouldn’t your student use the course?
The Applied Chemistry course is definitely non-traditional science course (though no less valid than a traditional course).
If your student might be going into a science-oriented career or loves the math side of chemistry, then Applied Chemistry might NOT be the right course for them. (Which is aok – I am so thankful for people who love the deep details of all sorts of sciences!)
(But if they love science that much, they could always do both traditional chemistry AND Applied Chemistry!)
I hope these questions help you understand your student better. You are always their biggest cheerleader and best person to choose what's best for them!
